Science and Food - Lizzy

Healthy eating is required to live long and healthy. Research for healthy food have gone along constantly and science is being used for that research. However, is science always right or not? The answer is “both.” Science allows us to discover new about food and treat ourselves with healthier and more delicious foods. Nevertheless, the misconceptions about food due to science such as fat, eggs, etc., disturbs us in eating good food. However, I think that the possibility of misrepresentation and the harm caused by the misuse of science may be harmful, but science can make food more abundant.

 For example, ‘Foodtech’ is a word combined food and technology. Foodtech is new area that combines IT technology with our eating habits, such as cooking, searching for restaurants, and delivering food. Foodtech is a new one that includes almost everything in the food industry, from analyzing the supply of ingredients or creating new foodstuffs to start-up companies with food-themed services, Industry. Though not well known to us, the start-up companies that create new food are more than we think. If you think about food and science together, pigments, food additives and other bad things come up first, but science is being used to create more environmentally friendly and healthy food ingredients. For example, 'Hampton Creek Food' makes eggs using vegetable ingredients. In fact, cookies and muffins made with this egg are said that they have the same flavor as cookies made with real eggs. A similar example is ‘Beyond Meat’, which uses beans to make chicken and beef. In fact, meat products using soybeans have been popular many times before, but ‘Beyond Meat’ is difficult to distinguish flavor or texture from actual meat. The reason for trying vegetable food ingredients is to reduce damage to human beings, nature and everyone, as the livestock industry grows. If we can produce the ingredients from the livestock industry in the factory, it is as environmentally friendly as it is good for the human body, and it is also possible to supply cheaper meat. In addition, it is the significance of food technology that it has become a hope that it will be possible to taste similar to actual meat according to technological advancement. In the past, if you simply made meat using soy protein, you are now trying to find a way to taste similar ingredients by analyzing the material at a molecular level using specific science.


There are many processes in which food is digested and absorbed in our bodies from the preparation of materials. Full-fledged research into food and human beings has only recently begun. As many secrets as yet to be revealed, we expect that human food tables will be enriched in the future due to various foods, dishes, microorganisms, and health.
